Mensana is not a hospital, and has been in operation since 1978.  It was accredited by CARF.  The clinic was listed in Business Week as one of the eight best pain clinics in the United States.  As a private facility, it does not accept Medicaid or Medicare patients.  Mensana Clinic is located in an historic mansion in the Greenspring Valley area of Baltimore County.  The building houses a Boarding facility called Mensana Inn.   Patients may choose to stay at one of several local motels and commute daily to the program.

Program personnel reported that this facility treated about 320 people in 1998 (vs. 430 in 1996), and caseloads are growing about 6-7% annually. This would bring the estimated 2000 caseload to about 360.  The clinic has approximately 9,500 “patient visits” per year.  At least one-half of all patients have had surgery as a result of being accurately diagnosed at the clinic. 78% of the patients come from outside the Baltimore area.

Over 75% of the residential patients at Mensana Clinic are from 32 states and 8 foreign countries. 98% of the referrals to Mensana Clinic are from physicians. The average length of stay is 21 days.  The average inpatient cost of treatment was about $12,000 in 1999 (vs. $8,000 in 1996).  Most of the patients from out of state enter the inpatient program. Mensana reports that 75% of its patients are not residents.  On-site services available include the full spectrum of techniques: daily trigger point injections, nerve blocks, psychological tests, biofeedback, daily group therapy, sensory nerve testing, goal setting, stress management, and TENS, among others.

Nelson Hendler, MD, MS is the Clinical Director of Mensana Clinic.  Dr. Hendler is Board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and has a Masters degree in neurophysiology.  He is a part-time faculty member of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in the Department of Neurosurgery, as well as the University of Maryland School of Dental Surgery in The Department of Physiology. He is the former Assistant Director of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Pain Treatment Center.  He is also on the board of the American Pain Foundation.

All Mensana consultants are chosen for expertise in their specific field.  They are full or part-time faculty members at either The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine or The University of Maryland Schools of Medicine and Dental Surgery.

Mensana helps patients with back, leg and foot, hand, arm, shoulder, neck, face and rib pain, headaches, RSD, TMJ, failed back and neck surgery, and lightning strike and electrical injuries.  One physician, the Clinical Director, manages all patients from evaluation to discharge.  The Clinical Director meets with patients each day to review progress and answer questions.
