Pain Control & Rehab Institute of Georgia 2784 N. Decatur Road, Suite 120 Decatur, GA 30033 (404-297-1400)
Contact: Shulim Spector, MD At this facility, 100% of the patients treated are outpatients. Approximately 4,500 patient visits per year are handled. New patients equal about 20% of the total. Personnel report that they have noticed more pain clinics opening up in their area, mostly by anesthesiologists. The average cost of treatment is about $11,000. This facility serves mainly back and headache pain patients, but has started to treat increasing numbers of acute pain patients as well. At this center, the following plans may be used...... Outpatient program..... treatment similar to that provided for inpatient, visits held 2-3 times weekly. Usually, a complete rehab program takes about 15 total treatment days, spread out over a few months. Patients completing treatment at the Institute are scheduled for follow- up visits as needed. Before leaving, they are given an individual plan of activities to be performed at home. Specific treatment methods offered by the Institute: · Pain medication management - many drugs available for acute and semi-acute pain have side effects, or may be misused over a long time period. Physicians guide patients in reducing such drugs. However, some are useful in treating chronic pain, and will be discussed as to proper use. · Behavioral-psychological therapy - Two forms are used, active physical therapy to improve posture, strength, etc., or passive (thermal packs) or electrical stimulating devices. · Nerve blocks - injecting a safe drug close to nerve structures to provide temporary relief. · Vocational/disability management - Patients are taken through a comprehensive program involving these phases: 1) medical evaluation of physical impairment and of remaining functional capacity, skills, and abilities; 2) vocational evaluation to assess feasibility of particular kinds of work; 3) vocational counseling. All referring doctors receive copies of initial evaluations, summaries of treatment provided, and copies of final assessments.
